B2B Recruitment Strategy for Luxury Service

Project: Strategic Marketing Plan for Wanderlux Salon + Spa
Role: Marketing Strategy Consultant (Team Collaboration)

In Fall 2024, I worked within a four-person marketing team to solve a critical hiring challenge for Wanderlux Salon + Spa, a premier self-care destination in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our mission was to develop a comprehensive roadmap to attract and retain experienced hairstylists in a highly competitive market, with a goal of increasing the team size by 25% by early 2025.

The Problem: Visibility vs. Credibility

Wanderlux had a stellar reputation, boasting a 4.9-star rating and a strong Instagram following of over 5,000. However, they faced two major bottlenecks in their growth:
  • Recruitment Gap: While they excelled at attracting customers, they lacked a dedicated digital "funnel" to attract experienced professionals.
  • Market Competition: Large local competitors had more visible job listings and established employee testimonial programs.
  • Process Friction: Potential applicants found it difficult to find direct contact details or understand the specific benefits of Wanderlux's unique "non-gratuity" pay structure.

My Actions: Strategy & Market Analysis

As part of the strategy team, I contributed to the research and development of a 28-page integrated marketing proposal.
  • Competitor Benchmarking: I helped conduct a deep dive into the recruitment tactics of local competitors like Design 1 and Ethos, identifying the "missing pieces" in the Wanderlux digital experience.
  • SWOT & Persona Development: We performed a SWOT analysis to identify Wanderlux’s "Green Circle" sustainability and inclusive culture as major hiring hooks. I contributed to building a target persona—an experienced stylist looking for work-life balance and stable income.

  • Action Program Design: We proposed a three-pronged solution:
      1. Web Optimization: Designing a "Careers" page mockup that clearly outlines company values and benefits.
      1. Social Campaigning: Creating an Instagram hiring campaign using targeted industry hashtags.
      1. Referral Incentives: Developing an employee referral program to leverage the current team's network.

The Results: A Ready-to-Launch Blueprint

Although the client’s business priorities shifted during the project’s development (leading to a pause in implementation), the value of our work remained high:
  • Strategic Deliverable: We provided the client with a professional, 28-page strategic blueprint including a full marketing budget and data-driven KPIs.
  • Differentiation: We successfully identified a way to market the salon's "non-gratuity" pay as a stability-focused benefit for senior stylists.
  • Collaborative Success: This project allowed me to practice high-level business consulting, learning how to pivot strategies based on real-world client feedback and competitive market shifts.
